First try to Mars, first to the lunar south pole, cheaper than the movies - and the crew comes next.

CASE BRIEF06 JUL 2026

India reached Mars orbit on its very first attempt, in 2014, for less than Hollywood spent making a film about being stranded in orbit, and that captures the pattern: it does the expensive thing cheaply and gets it right first time more often than the odds allow. In 2013 the beat filed India, if at all, as the outfit that launched other people's satellites on the cheap, but by 2026 it has landed at the Moon's south pole - the first to manage it, days after Russia crashed trying the same thing - docked two craft in orbit, and started building toward crewed flight, with an uncrewed rehearsal in 2026 and its own astronauts in 2027. It has thrown the doors open too, standing up a regulator, a commercial arm and a crop of private launch startups behind a goal of quadrupling its slice of the global space economy. A sample-return with Japan, a station by 2035 and Indians on the Moon by 2040 are all on the board, and ISRO tends to arrive late on the date and early on the price.

Reaching Mars cost India about 74 million dollars. Gravity, the film in which Sandra Bullock floats around low orbit for ninety minutes, cost more than that to make, and India's prime minister pointed it out himself. The Mars Orbiter Mission arrived in 2014, on the first attempt, which most space agencies are not allowed by physics or luck to do.

That is the whole ISRO pattern: the expensive thing, done cheap, and done first try more often than the odds permit.

None of it was in the cabinet you are reading. In 2013 the beat looked west, to Mojave, the Cape, the occasional Russian rocket, and India was filed, if at all, under "launches other people's satellites for less." By 2026 that filing is wrong. ISRO is a top-tier agency the rest of the field now plans around.

In August 2023 India set a lander down near the Moon's south pole, the first country to put anything there. The part that gets left out is the timing, because days earlier Russia's Luna-25 had gone for the same ground and crashed into it - same week, same target, opposite result. Chandrayaan-3 cost roughly 75 million.

In January 2025 ISRO docked two spacecraft in orbit, the fourth nation to manage it. Docking is the least glamorous line on this page and the one everything else rests on, because nothing - no station, no Moon mission, no orbital refuelling - happens without it. India can do it now.

The next step is people. Gaganyaan will fly a crew to low orbit on a human-rated LVM3, after three uncrewed rehearsals. The first, G1, carries a half-humanoid robot called Vyommitra instead of astronauts and is expected later in 2026, while the crewed flight is targeted for 2027, which would make India the fourth country to launch its own people on its own rocket. One of the four assigned astronauts, Shubhanshu Shukla, has already been up - he flew to the ISS commercially on Axiom-4 in 2025, a quiet dress rehearsal. It has not been a clean run-in: ISRO has just taken back-to-back launch failures, and the chairman's line is that Gaganyaan's rocket is qualified separately and the schedule holds. That is the correct thing to say. It is also what every agency says before it finds out.

What earns ISRO a file in a commercial archive is the opening of the doors: a regulator called IN-SPACe, a commercial arm called NSIL, and private launchers like Skyroot and Agnikul going after the small-rocket market. The stated aim is to grow India's share of the global space economy from about 2 percent to 8. Asked about SpaceX, the chairman says none of it is a competition. Of course he does.

On the board sit a lunar sample-return mission and a follow-up with Japan around 2028, an Indian space station by 2035, and Indians on the Moon by 2040. Whether those dates hold is the open question for every agency in this drawer, and ISRO's record is that it tends to arrive late on the date and early on the price.
